A devoted but wronged Hindu wife became a goddess and a woman who defied her society but found solace from the Buddha. These stories illustrate themes that are as fresh today as they were two thousand years ago. Scholar and curator Donald Stadtner investigates the complex syncretism of religions in Sri Lanka as illustrated by the goddess Pattin, a Sri Lankan Buddhism guardian deity who, as Kannaki Amman is also revered by Sri Lankan Tamil Hindus.
Donald Stadtner was for many years an Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin, after receiving his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. He was recently co-curator for the Asia Society's Buddhist Art of Myanmar exhibition and is now preparing the Sacred Sites of Sri Lankan.
